Guestbook

Thank you for visiting Noll Guitar's little corner of the web. We would love it if you would add to this guestbook we are keeping!

While Jim does outstanding work, the other guy there kind of rambles on about any and everything, with no end in sight. Prices for work or parts is very reasonable. This shop is good, but in my opinion, slightly over rated. I've seen better as close as Groton. Kenny Nash is truly the current master craftsman as of 2005. He is unmatched at this time. No offense boys, just my opinion.

Alex, thank you so much for not only advising me on my first guitar purchase, but for working with me to resolve my hypermobility-related issues. I wouldn’t have been able to start playing without your help, and I’m pretty positive that I wouldn’t have been nearly as happy with my current guitar. As an added bonus, the friend who accompanied me for 2 of the 3 two of the visits - and admits that he doesn’t have a musical bone in his body - even learned a few things from listening in on your instruction! You obviously have a true talent for what you do. So thank you again for all of your help. I enjoyed working together and won’t hesitate to reach out for advice, repairs, or anything else that comes up!

In 1996 Noll built a custom Tele for me that has been on more gigs in the last 25 years than any other guitar I own. Last week I brought it in for some routine maintenance and talked to Steve about a few ideas. A week later I got it back with tons of new options with pick up switching that I never had before. It was a great sounding guitar before, now it's like a brand new Swiss Army knife of an axe. No matter who's taken care of my guitar needs at Noll for the last 40 years, it's always been an A1 job. The best in the biz!

My grandsons are taking guitar lessons so for Christmas I purchased the oldest a LesPaul kit, figured we could spend some quality time together building it, after the build was complete we took it to Noll guitar for a setup. All I can say is wow, awesome setup, she plays like Gibson themselves built it. Great job.

Brought in my 1983 Spector bass on a recommendation from a national Spector facebook group. The bass had sat for a couple decades while I raised my family. It needed some love and, due to the sentimental/monetary value of it, I was anxious about finding the right shop for it. Fortunately, I took the recommendations of the group and brought it in. It has truly never played better than it does now. Everything is spot on. They do meticulous work and extremely fairly priced. And they are a wealth of knowledge regarding stringed instruments. Well worth traveling out of state for the peace of mind that I will be taken care of.

A little late with this review (but I could not refrain from posting). I brought in my much neglected Les Paul Deluxe last May for a jack replacement and total refret. Wanted to give it one last shot for redemption for the usual reasons mentioned about 70's Norlin era Gibsons, way too heavy, and fretless wonder frets. Always liked the sound but...... What a great job!!!! This guitar is now such a pleasure to play I kick myself for waiting so long to bring it in. I no longer bitch about the weight and marvel at what a nice musical instrument I have. Thanks so much once again!

I just picked up my 80's G & L Invader from Steve at Noll Guitars. They swapped out HSS Carvin pickup set that I've used for a few years to a Tom Anderson hum-cancelling singles w/ coil taps and a Seymour Duncan JB bridge setup. The routing, installation and bridge setup (Kahler) was top notch and the pickups sound absolutely amazing. Seriously new life in this guitar now. Never trust anyone but Noll Guitars to work on your instruments and you will be a very happy player! Thanks Steve, Stan, Jim and the rest of the great crew, another successful job well done!

Took my J bass to Noll for some repairs / set up. Steve addressed every issue and did a fantastic job! This bass is my work horse and I was very happy to have everything resolved. Not to mention, at a very fair and reasonable price. The best part about taking your guitar here is that there is no up sell or nonsense. Just a straightforward approach by people who know their craft and take pride in their work. Once again, thanks for the excellent work!

I brought a nice Epiphone LP into the shop. I bought it from a guy who had kept it in his closet for the last 2 years. Action was ridiculously high..it was almost unplayable. This thing is a beast now..after the set up. I've had a lot of compliments. I won't take a guitar that needs work anywhere else.

Thanks for breathing new life into my Taylor and Tele. Before I brought them in, playing/practicing was like trying to cut down a redwood with a butter knife. Now The before and after comparison has really underscored the importance of proper maintenance. Quick turnaround ,excellent communications, and a sincere customer relations approach.

These guys do great work and are prompt at getting your instruments back. They corrected a ‘diy’ bone saddle replacement on my acoustic (I had the action too high and it wasn’t sitting right in the bridge). Thanks again for your help, I’ll definitely bring my business here in the future.

Stan warned me that the super low action with the 9.5's I wanted on my 93 Gibson SG might get some fret buzz. 3 years later never the slightest buzz on any note! I'll never sell or change anything on it. Plays amazing! Stays in tune very well for a Gibson as well

Brought my MIM Strat in to upgrade the stock pickups. I told Stan I just wanted the simple switch, but he talked me into doing a seven sound upgrade and coil tapping the humbucker, best decision I ever made! These guys clearly know their stuff. From the sound I wanted, Stan took my ideas and made a game plan, and him and Steve made it happen. Now, I can't seem to put down my Strat, great work guys :)

I first met the guys at Noll Guitars in 1992. I had a sprung neck on a 1960 ES 125. The block inside the body had de-laminated. They removed the top, rebuilt the block and reassembled the Gibson which then had a perfect action. What great craftsmanship! Since then, I had several set ups on acoustics, electrics and basses and each has been perfect. Recently, I had a ground hum from my Taylor acoustic. The quickly diagnosed the problem and replaced the internal pick-up while I waited. Remarkable fix and great service with no down time and I got to use my guitar for an important gig that weekend. They are knowledgeable, highly skilled and super friendly. I can't say enough about the team at Noll Guitars!

You know, I traveled 400 miles back to Providence for an annual family get-together, also taking along my Martin guitar for the sole reason of having Jim or Stan at Noll Guitar do the repair needed. Imagine that! My fame (now long gone) came as the opening act of 'Bilbo the singing dog' a few decades back, and as I'm getting on in years now, I am glad to say that I'm still performing at amusement parks around the country (thank God) ... and even without my singing dog, 'Bilbo', I'm still a howling success. Imagine that! ron bianco http://MrRonn.com

After many years of neglecting my jazz bass, I decided to take her to Noll Guitars for some upkeep. Stan took a quick look at her and immediately knew what needed to be done. As promised, my bass was ready in a week. When I arrived, Stan had me try it out to ensure that everything was right. Not only was everything right, the setup far exceeded my expectations. This bass now plays like it should and it feels great! If you are looking to have work done on your guitar, just take it to Noll and get it done right!

I've had Noll set up a number of guitars for me, always did a nice job. This time I brought them a 10-year-old acoustic still with factory setup. No knock of factory setups, they have no idea were the guitar will end up, or who will play it. I told Steve my picking style, discussed action and off they went. I received the guitar today, it played beautifully. I took it home and I know they massaged the nut and saddle, but guitar looked pristine. Dinner was late as I spent an hour playing my guitar and marveling at how it no longer fights me, playing smoothly, easily with no buzz at all.

I found a used BC Rich Beast bass at a Guitar Center but the horns were chipped like most Beasts that I've seen used and was planning on trying to touch it up myself. I asked the salesman if he knew anyone who did restorations on guitars and he recommended Noll Guitars so I dropped it off and told them what I wanted done. When I picked it up I was blown away!! It looked like a brand new bass!! There was no sign of the chipped horns and they matched the paint perfect. I took it home and started playing and I noticed there was a buzz on one fret that I didn't hear when I was playing it at the store where I bought it so I took back to Noll Guitars and had them set the action. Once again they did a great job and now it plays and sounds awesome. I will be giving this shop all my future business, they really know guitars, thanks so much guys!!!

Brought my vintage 1965 Bassman in for a tune-up. Was told it would be ready in a week. Three days later, got a voice-mail that it was ready. When I picked it up, Bob the Amp Guy gave me a bag of everything he replaced. (A lot of stuff!) It sounds like brand new. Noll Guitars did everything they said they would in less time than they promised and at what I would consider a VERY fair price. There's no place like NOLL.

Steve, I considered trading in my '83 Guild D-25 NT, a guitar that I have owned for 31 years. Though it always looked beautiful, it was never set up well and was a painful guitar to play; especially in the 5th position down. Before I made that rash trade-in decision, I figured I'd take it to the renowned Noll Guitars to see what you guys could do with it. Wow! The work you did was incredible. It plays like butter and never sounded better. I couldn't be happier with it. Now I can comfortably keep and play a piece of vintage Rhode Island history; a Westerly Guild. Thanks very much Steve. I really appreciate your work and your customer service all for a great price. I can't wait to see what Noll does with my '89 Ovation; another vintage piece of New England music history.

I just wanted to thank Noll Guitars' Jim L. for recommending and installing a great replacement pickup for my Strat. I've always had trouble finding the correct amp/pedal combo for my rig, and it turns out it's been my bridge pickup all this time. When I fired up my rig this time around I had no issues finding the sounds I needed, in the past it's always been a real chore. Also, the fit/finish is fantastic. I don’t wanna leave Stan outta da love fest, though… he’s always done me right whenever he did the work. Over the years, if I had any issue with the work, and I think I can remember only one time in the past 2 decades, the resolution was quick and more than satisfactory. I’m gonna stop the rant for now, but I’ll tell ya, I don’t think there’s any reason to go anywhere else for my repair needs… and you should be like me. :-)

I brought in a 2011 custom shop Stratocaster in Fiesta Red. My dream guitar. A stunning looking guitar with a beautiful birds eye neck and great sound. Trouble is I could not keep it in tune. Noll's set it up beautifully and even adjusted the pop-in tremolo for me while I waited. I cannot thank them enough for solving the tuning issues. Jim Radican

Customer service at Noll is unmatched. Was in a time constraint and needed a not so common piece of hardware for my Floyd Rose set up, Noll had it. Steve made the whole experience seamless. I had to purchase a few other items via telephone as well. They rang it up and put it a side for another party to pick up for me. Class act group. Look no further, this is the place. Will continue to do business with them into the foreseeable future!!

Earlier this year I brought two 70's les paul deluxes to the Noll shop. A headstock repair with splines was done very nicely, and the other needed the original, very worn frets to be replaced. Both guitars are in a much better state after the talented staff at Noll Guitars did a great job for a fair price. Best wishes to the entire staff. A work mate asked me if I knew where he should take his strat for some fret work, and i gave him the Noll website info. Thanks again.

brought in a tele neck that I thought had a striped truss rod nut. The "tec" took it to the bench and returned two minutes later telling me that all I need was a longer allen key! Talk about HONEST!! He could have easily told me to come back in 30 minutes and charge me for fixing it, but he didn't. These are the guys to trust with your guitars, no question about it. Thank you and I will return! Well; I slipped on the snow a while back with my Spectre Bass Guitar in my hand ... and it went slamming face forward into the pavement!@#$%&*! Thought surely it was splatterd into smitherines. Turns out, there was a hairline crack in the head right adjacent to one of the keys; and some very flattened out strings at the nut. Where to go? Where to go??? (I was in PA. at the time). Ah Ha! I had plans to be in RI in a few weeks ... sooo, "To Nolls, to Nolls, to Nolls I will go." I said to myself. But I would only be in RI for 10 days. Oh gosh, would they be able to repair it (if indeed it was repairable) in sooo short a time? Called and spoke to Stan, bringing it in to him, he felt it was repairable, and said he'd have it ready in a week for me! "GREAT!!!" But, then, "Oh Oh!" there was a-comin' a big storm and I would not be able to get there on Friday as planned ... Could he have it for me to pick up Thursday I asked??? And so he did. Sounds good, job done. Thank you all at Noll Guitar ... As Bilbo my dog would have said; "You have my tail a-waggin'". And God bless.

After years of intonation problems with my 1976 Martin D-35L (bought new in 78), and many many attempts to get it remedied by a Martin authorized repairman, and waiting for a new bridge blank for months from Martin, I took my daughter, Lisa's, advice and took it to Noll Guitars. in two weeks I had a new custom-made bridge with new saddle slot and now - just a true joy to play. thanks so much guys. mike couto 50 years of gigging (and counting...)

I brought my MIM Telecaster Nashville Deluxe to address fret buzz, not holding tune on the first two strings, poor intonation, changes to a black pickguard and middle pickup cover, and to have the tone control swapped for a push-pull that allowed for the front and back pickups to be used together. Steve did a masterful setup, making the guitar play and sound great. The best part, though, is the seven-tone setup; chords are rich and detailed with the neck and bridge p'ups together. My MexiTele is fun to play and more versatile now. It even looks better. Thanks guys, I'm very pleased.

Brought in a Bass amp looking for help on a problem that is clearly evident with a good ear. So i talk to the amp guy plugs his guitar into it and tells me its fine. No crap its gonna be fine with a guitar its a bass amp!!! They basically said there's nothing they can do and left me very disappointed, I don't think most of them truely know what they are doing, just the basics and a little extra.

For Rob (whose comments are listed below), sorry you feel that way. First off, you can barely string a sentence together (its called PUNCTUATION), and secondly, the "old guy" at Noll actually has a lot of really good information to impart to those who have the sense (and decency) to listen. If you are in such a big hurry, why don't you bring your instrument to be set up at Guitar Center? You probably wouldn't know the difference anyways.

Just picked up my Gibson L-48 (1948) yesterday. I had them repair a crack in the bout, glue down some trim, adjust the neck and then install a Kent Armstrong pickup (floating of course). Jim had to make a new pickguard for the job. Well, I can't believe how the guitar sounds. I have had the sound of this guitar in my head for decades, and now it is real. So great, quality work...I only bring my guitars to them...Now if I can find a way to have them build me a Jazzmaster clone...Thanks Noll, you are the best.

I stopped by Noll Guitars in Cranston, RI to show the boys my new Blueridge BR 63 000 body guitar. It has a laminated rosewood back and sides with a solid spruce top. The sound was incredibly even and the guitar very alive out of the box. We were amazed at the construction and overall good tone from this inexpensive instrument. Jim mentioned he had a devise that is attached to the guitar and vibrates the unit so as to open up the tone as to allow the instrument to realize its full sound potential as if played for years. I gave him the guitar and told Jim to have a go at it. He played the instrument straight out of the case and recorded the instrument documenting the frequency response across the spectrum. He attached the devise, a Tone Rite, and allowed it to vibrate the instrument for 7 days/24 hours daily. When finished, Jim recorded the instrument again documenting the frequency response across the spectrum. He gave me the instrument and I brought it home to play. I was impressed. The instrument had a stronger bass and mid response and was very alive. I was not sure the high end benefited by this devise. I spoke to Jim about trying the unit again to concentrate in the high end frequencies for a more balanced tonality. Seven days/24 hours a day later the instrument was returned to me. I brought it home and was amazed at the fullness and volume that the Tone Rite brought forth from the instrument. It was as if I had played the Blueridge for years as the sound was so mature and even from the bass and low mids to the high end of the sound spectrum. I asked if he would do the same for my classical guitar, a $1000 handmade Manuel Bachiller P2 classical with solid Indian rosewood back and sides and a spruce top with bor saddle and nut. Again for seven days/24 hours a day. What incredible results in the bass response. The overall tone is warm with a solid projected sound. This process works well on solid body instruments as well. It is well worth looking into for the cost is nominal. Thank you, Jim, for your turning me on to this product. Bill Marrocco

I have a ESP LTD M-15, which I just bought over a month ago, brand new at Guitar Center. Well today, I was in the process of putting some Aluminum Shielding tape in, when after I was done, I wasn't getting any sound at all from the guitar, so I gave Stan a call and he said to bring it down and that they would look at it for free. It turned out that some of the shielding was hitting the soldering on one of the Pots, so his asst. Steve, just patted the shielding down and Viola!, my guitar was back to normal and it didn't cost me a dime! What would've cost me around $50.00 or so at Guitar Center, cost me nothing at Noll's and I was also treated with the utmost respect and courtesy while I was there. I reccommend Noll Guitars to all of my fellow musicians in the New England area. Stay away from GC, they're nothing but a bunch of thieving bastards. Noll's rocks!

Stan is, quite simply, the best. An honest, caring, virtuous man who also happens to be one of the most knowledgeable and talented luthiers in the business. Stan and the guys in his shop deliver some of the most painstaking, high-quality work I have ever seen in my forty-plus years of playing. Over the years, I've taken everything from a crumbling 1920s Gibson mandolin to mail-order Chinese campfire guitars to Stan's shop, and without exception they have made each one a pleasure to behold and play. I'm all the way in Austin, Texas now, and I still call Stan up when I need to get my gear straight. (Now if I could just get him to open a satellite shop down here, all would truly be well.)

There are two reasons why Noll Guitars is the best damn shop of its kind in the business. First of all, they tell you the TRUTH. It may confuse you, it may anger you, it may amuse you, but it is the truth none-the-less. And the truth often involves SAVING YOU MONEY!! Imagine that. You will come to trust their suggestions and advice. Secondly, they will make your expensive instrument sound and feel even better, and they will make your inexpensive (OK, cheap) instrument sound and feel like an expensive one. I don't know how they do it, there must be sorcery involved. These guys totally rock -- don't trust your investment with anyone else. Cheers, Jim

I wanted to thank you guys for the great work you've done for my bass and acoustic guitar in the past, I really appreciate it. I brought my Fender Precision (Mexican) bass in awhile ago, which was converted to a fretless already when I brought it in to your shop, to install a Jazz Bass pickup in the bridge, to make it a "hybrid", or "PJ" bass. I wanted a clearer sound with more definition, plus it makes the fretless bass come alive (especially the harmonics), even when I put flatwound bass strings on. That's the sound I was going for. But I want to thank you for routing that bridge for me and putting that pickup in - I'm really thankful. I knew that was really the only way I could have done that little modification, and you did it really well. I'm very happy with it. Peace, Khin

To Stan, Jimmy, Steve, Ralph and all at Noll Guitars, Hey guys, it's Josh. Sorry I didn't stop in to see you guys before I left town - things got crazy before I left and I wound up getting approved for school which started on the 23rd. I'll sned you guys an email with more details... As for the guestbook - Thanks SO MUCH for making all my guitars be better then I ever imagined. Ranging from the special orders for parts and pickups, to the custom routings to get them 7-string EMG's in, and the stop-in quick tweaks you guys have done for me... I can't thank you guys enough for the top notch service and expertise you've supplied me with over the years! From my Green Kamikaze 7 with the EMG 707's, SPC & EXG, the new ESP Stephen Carpenter that the 707TW's, concentric pot, mini-toggles and Afterburner went in (which came out just as sick as the green one did!!!), it is clear to see why and how Noll Guitars is THE BEST place to have any stringed instrument worked on. You just can't get any better than the guys at Noll!!! At some point, I'll be doing business with you guys still... I’ve mean meaning to share my experiences with this luthier shop in Cranston, RI. I first brought my Les Paul Traditional there for a general set up, and because I couldn’t get the G string to intonate properly. Result: excellent Then brought the Squire Tele for intonation and checkup. I wanted it to play as true as possible, given that it has a 3 saddle rather than 6 saddle bridge configuration. They explained that given the type of bridge that most all vintage (or made to look vintage) teles have (3 saddle), that perfect intonation is not really possible, but there is a small machine shop in PA that makes an enhanced compensated 3 saddle set that solves the issue. (Callaham Guitars. I got the stainless finish to match existing hardware.) Result: intonation as near perfect as you can get... very satisfied! I mentioned that I’d like to get the Keith Richard/Bruce Springsteen chicken pickin’ type sound and the squire didn’t seem to have that high end characteristic. They had the fix for that as well and recommended a 1 meg tone pot and .47 mF roll-off capacitor. I agreed to that and sure enough, this mod did the trick. I mentioned that I heard some electrical clicks when using the pickup selector, or when tapping on the pick guard. They replaced the switch and re-shielded the control cavity and under the pick guard. That worked as well. They are extremely efficient and very knowledgeable and trustworthy. Their prices are reasonable. They are all really nice people. If you’re thinking about tune-ups or repairs on any of your guitars, I would give them a shot. You won’t be disappointed.

Thank you everyone at Noll's. Especially Ralph for bringing in his personal guitar for me to test the David Gilmour pickups before I bought them, and in addition setting up his pedal board for me to play through. I could spend all day here talking shop, and even better, every time I step foot in the door I learn something valuable. The small things like saving a college student money while providing an excellent upgrade, on the fly fixing intonation, and appraising my dad's 70's Les Paul Recording were all appreciated. Now I can finally say all my guitars play phenomenally and I would go no where else than Noll's to have work done. These professionals are straightforward, honest, talented, and above all, treat the customer like a true friend! Thanks Guys, Will

Recently had my Gibson Les Paul Studio worked on. The headstock was cracked most of the way thru, and the pickup that came stock was startin to sound kinda funny so i requested a tone zone put in the bridge. The headstock is solid as ever and the pickup kicks you right in the chest, Easily the best money i've spent on musical equiptment in the past few years, i'm going to reccomend your shop to anybody that asks about repairs.

I had a setup done on an Art and Lutherie acoustic to lower the action. I was pleased at the action initially when I got it back but within a week the string buzzing on 4 strings made it unplayable. Disappointed, I took it to another guitar shop, they said the bridge was filed way too low for an acoustic guitar, and did a truss rod adjustment. This worked, the next step would have been shim stock added to the bridge. Very displeased with Noll Guitars. They made my guitar unplayable. I brought it to them because of all the positive reviews on their website, but I will not go back.

Just went to change out some Rio Grande pickups I had installed by you guys in late 2008 on an inexpensive but treasured DiPinto Mach IV guitar. I was very unhappy to see that you had routed the pickup cavity to within a milimeter of where the pickguard ends in order to accomodate the new pickups. This was done without my knowledge or consent, and quite franky, I'm really pissed off. If the pickups wouldn't fit, you should have told me that I either had to find pickups with a narrower

Ever since I was inspired to pick up my dad's old Epiphone a decade ago and try a few chords, Noll Guitars has been the place for any and all work done on the dozen or so instruments I've owned thereafter. They are accomplished problem-solvers with encyclopedic knowledge of their craft, built on a bedrock of honesty and straightforwardness that's so hard to find in the on-call luthiers who drop by Guitar Center every other Thursday to turn a truss rod and leave you hanging with some middleman who just wants so badly to sell you a Squier. The guys at Noll are the real deal, and I feel lucky to have their services nearby.

Noll Guitars was the first team that did work my guitars (a 90's Ovation acoustic, '84 Strat, and an Aria Pro Mandolin). I've never had any reason to look for anyone else, since their work has always been spectacular. I'm just an average guitar player, but I have always been treated as a number one customer, from the Foundry, to Pontiac Mills, and now in Cranston (I'm heading down tomorrow to get a set up and wiring check on the Ovation!). They have always gone the extra mile, like the time that Stan called the folks at Fishman to determine where the piezo element was embedded in the mandolin bridge pickup he was installing, so he could get the fit just right. I'm happy to have rediscovered you guys in Cranston and looking forward to bringing my instruments to you going forwrd. You're awesome!

Jim and Stan saved the life of my late father's es-335. It had been sitting unplayed for years in a damp basment, and as a result, left the neck looking like a corkscrew! Not only that, the truss rod nut had snapped off like a bottle cap. Most of us would have thrown it away, but because of it's great sentimental value, they had to do something. Well I can say I play this guitar everyday and it sounds better than anything I play in the music stores! It's neck is just right and it really looks like nothing happened to it. I'll be bringing in my Les Paul to have the headstock fixed and I'll have no worries that it will be good as new.

I recently gave my Telecaster to Jim for a refret (med/jumbo) and new nut. This an early 70's guitar that had a brass nut and the frets were pretty worn so i did hesitate on the move. Plugged it in over a friends house for a little jam...what a difference, this guitar is alive and plays fantastic. I also gave to Stan a 54 reissue strat that my son had in Florida that was just the body, neck, tuners and bridge all the guts were gone. Stan put new pickups, guard and set up this guitar..just a great guitar. So thanks Jim and Stan for taking 2 good guitars and making them great.

Jim, Many thanks for your wonderful work on my D-18! Rather than sending to Martin for a new bridge, you fashioned a custom bridge in the shop with a matching wood to keep the guitar as original as possible. I was blown away! I bought the Custom Jazzmaster shown on the Gallery page off of e-Bay a while back. The looks, playability and tone (especially the tone) put my two American Jazzmasters to shame. I also think the output is higher because that useless "rhythm circuit" that Fender puts in is not there. The only down side is that I baby it too much and don't play it out as often as I should because it's probably irreplaceable. Nice work!

So, this is the place to go if you want your instrumnet to play and sound it's best. I brought in my 1969 Gibson Hummingbird for it was getting to be almost unplayable. Stan grabbed the guitar, put it on his work bench, had Jim come over and hold the neck while he unloosened the strings and stuck his hand in the soundhole and pulled and prodded at the braces, just like it was thanksgiving and he was grabbing the giblets out of a turkey! At the same time I was being instructed on how to keep the guitar alive by having it properly humidified during the winter months. This is definitely a place where they love guitars and don't care if its a Gibson or Epiphone, they're main concern is making guitars playable and will not (and I stress this) "not" overcharge you or try to sell you a repair that is not required. When was the last time you had anything fixed by anyone and felt they really cared about what they were doing? Anyway, a new bridge was built and new frets were required and the guitar plays better than it has in 20 yrs! I could not be more pleased. Thanks Jim (and Stan) So folks, spend that Gov't rebate you get and head on down to Noll's Guitar Repair.

Jim recently installed a Fishman Matrix Infinity pickup in my 1983 Guild D-17M acoustic. I was very impressed by the fact that he called to tell me about a minor issue he encountered before he went ahead and completed the installation. I used it for the first time at an open mic this past weekend, and I had many comments about how good it sounded. I am very happy with the quality of the job, and how well it seems to capture the "natural" sound and tone of the guitar. Thanks again, Jim. I wish I had done this years ago!

It was not too long ago when my band had a show. It was about 2 days before hand and I had just gotten my Faded Gibson SG restrung for the show. Little did I know the tuning pegs were waiting to fall off, which one did. I rushed back to Stan to whom I explained my problem, to which he replied by showing me why the tuning pegs' bent steel was faulty, and got me some new tuning pegs, and knocked off roughly $20. The show was a ridiculous hit, and i owe it to Stan, and this is a tad overdue but thank you.

I have been a Noll Guitar customer since the early 90's when they were in the Foundry building. Stan and the crew are outstanding, knowledgeable and always willing to listen to their customer's needs. Stan has gone above and beyond the call of duty for me and I always appreciate it. 10 years ago, Noll Guitars fixed a problem neck of a Martin D-35 that I bought new in 1970 - after they worked on it, it was like a new guitar; played beautifully. I have always had Stan setup and repair my guitars (especially my tried and true G&L bass) and I have always been very satisfied with the work he and his staff have done. Make sure you tell your guitarist friends about Noll - they will surely thank you for it.

I'd like to take a few lines to thank Stan. I'm 15 and a few months ago, I brought a 1969 Harmony Sovereign H1270 12-string (abandoned in an attic for 25+ years) in because it was in need of a neck reset and a new bridge. Now, these things originally sold for about $150-180, and the total cost for repair was around $400. Instead of trying to plug a sale, Stan talked with me for about a half hour about acoustic guitars, the tension across them, acoustic amplification and how it developed (bigger bodies, steel guitars, doubling strings, etc), humidification, how never to buy an acoustic online, etc. I learned more in 30 minutes than I had ever learned through books and going online. Then he looked over the guitar thoroughly, told me straight out what was wrong with it and what needed to be done along with an estimate price. He told me something along the lines of "I mean, sure it's Americana and it has sentimental value, but are the price for the repairs really worth the guitars value?" He offered to do it, but said that I'd be better off saving my money and spending it on a new guitar. So Stan, thanks for your lecture about guitars and giving me a truthful suggestion about the Harmony. I guess it paid off, because I got a Martin D12X1 for Christmas with a sound that the Harmony has nothing on!

I was just checking the repairs price list because my Ovation 12 string is in need of a new bridge, and I figured I'd tell the the story of my buddy's Epiphone Les Paul. This goes back about 12 years, but the story is a testament to the work these guys do. He had received an Epi Les Paul for Christmas... not long after that, in the basement of another friend's house, that LP was knocked off its stand. The headstock hit the cement floor and basically shattered the neck around the 3rd fret, with a crack running a few frets up. I'll never forget the pain in his voice when he called to tell me. Anyway, He grabbed every sliver of wood he could find, wrapped it up and brought it to Noll. They did such an amazing job you can barely tell there was ever anything wrong with the guitar. I play this guitar often and to this day it's still one of the sweetest sounding, smoothest playing Epi's I've ever played. Can't wait till I have a little extra cash so I can get my 12 string fixed. I wouldn't even consider bringing it somewhere else!

As a fairly new Rhode Islander (I was a long-time M*sshole) I have to say that it's a complete joy to have RI's very own "Stew Mac" a few miles away. Twice I've been in a jam and Noll bailed me out. First, my ESP custom shop needed string lock screws. I said the F word and said "Great, I have to order them and wait two weeks from some place online." I looked online and even the parts suppliers were out of them. F word again. Luca Music said "What about Noll Guitars?". Being a naive new NoProv'er I didn't have a clue. Well, glad I do now. Noll (then in Warwick) goes "Yep, we have 4". SCORE. A short drive away and they were mine. Second bailout. I bought a nice set neck Schecter baritone and a set of EMG 81/85's. I hand them off to my guitar tech and I get a call from him: "Dude, you need a three way lever switch". F word yet again. This time, though, all the wiser, I looked up Noll online and saw they moved (good thing I checked!! haha) and knew that they'd be able to save me - and sure enough. The 3-way is on its way to my tech and the Schecter should be back to me safe sound and custom in a few days, and a recording session shall commence. YOU RULE. More areas needs places like Noll. Thanks again. Nicolas Vinculum Terminatii - Melodic Doom Metal http://www.myspace.com/vinculumterminatii

We call him Stan the man for a reason!! They converted my Gibson RD Artist from an active guitar to passive. Now the thing sounds like the ultimate guitar with all that wood and '57 classic plus Gibson sound. It sustains like crazy and sounds amazing thanks to Noll guitars. Thanks guys, Nic

Well I want to say that these guys really helped my dream bass become a reality. From fretless to custom pickup configuarations, to obscure repairs, basically anything is possible. So a note to musicians out there: Keep your mind open to explore and learn, because there is always something to learn. Thanks again, and peace out, Khin

A few weeks ago I was having a bad day. Not only did I screw up the tuners on my prized Martin CEO-5, but for good measure I put a two inch crack on the back. I would have been more ticked off if I didn't know about Nol Guitars. I took it Stan, and in four working days not only fixed the tuners and made the crack vanish, but installed ebony tuner buttons and bone bridge pins. You guys are the absolute best and I thank you for saving my Martin. If anybody out there needs work done on a guitar, bottom of the line cheap or second mortage expensive there is no better place to go than Nol. THANKS GUYS!

I am amazed at the quality of work done on my 68 Fender Pro Reverb. Bob Lipet did an amazing job getting the amp cleaned up and returned to stock construction. The turnaround was quick, Bob was easy to talk to regarding my concerns about certain aspects of the amp and the work was top notch. Thanks!

Once again, the folks at Noll's did not disappoint. I brought a tele style guitar in for wiring and setup. I picked it up and it plays like a dream. Great action all the way up the neck. Not a single buzz or dead spot. Wiring as clean as can be. I used Texas Special pickups with a 4-way switch, it's an awesome sound. Nice job,Jim. You guys have always freely shared your knowledge with me,and your funny stories, which keeps me coming back. I've brought such guitars into the shop as my mid-70's Ibanez artist, my early 70's Dobro, and my early 90's Rhode Island-made Guild acoustic electric, and each of them has played like a dream ever since. Kudos to all who work at the best shop you could imagine, Stan, Jim, Johnny, and the rest. I really appreciate having friends like you steering me down the right path. Good luck in the new location. I will see you soon. Your friend, Tom.

Once again, my hat is off to the best guitar guys out there. Jimmy did a fine job recently on a Tele style guitar I was putting together as a favor for a friend. Some of my shop equipment needed replacing, so I brought the guitar in to have it wired. What a clean wiring job Jim did. I let him do the setup also, and needless to say, my friend is elated with his new axe. It plays beautifully all the way up the neck, not a single buzz or dead spot. Great action on every fret. Simply professional workmanship. Every time I visit the shop, I am treated like an old friend. Stan, Jim and Johnny have always amazed me with their willingness to share their vast wealth of knowledge. They have been very encouraging to me as a luthier. There are usually other customers in the shop when I go there, ranging from seasoned players to budding students who are there with their moms, and every time I hear one of the guys talking to a customer, no matter the skill level, they treat the customer as someone special and make the customer feel comfortable. I highly recommecnd anyone reading these cudos to feel confident that anyone who walks in off the street will be treated kindly, and will probably benefit from one or two of Stan's whimsical stories. Once again, thanks very much guys for the great things you are doing down there, and I'll be sure to let all my guitarist friends know where your new shop is located in Cranston. Good luck with the move, and I'll see you soon. Your friend, Tom.

Fantastic job by Jim on my SG Custom with a broken horn, almost invisible repair, and the guitar was set up to play better than it EVER has. Jim also replaced the damaged foto-flame on the headstock of an old MIJ Jazz bass that was fun to play, but too ugly to look at it. Unbelievable job, it looks better than the day it came out of the factory. These guys are GOOD!

This is a testamonial I should have sent long ago, as I had a coil tap installed (push pull on the tone control) on my 93'Hamer special(w/ a replacement Seymour Duncan humbucker in the bridge position istalled by the previous owner) in the spring of 03'. I called Noll and talked to Stan, who was super attentive over the phone. He quoted me the price and said it would take 5- 7 days which sounded very reasonable to me. Two, (yes two!)days later he called saying I could pick it up. I know it's a relatively simply upgrade, but it was done perfectly, and finished way ahead of schedule, which impressed me ( but I won't always expect that). Everyone was super nice, and my Hamer, which was great, is now an amazing guitar (with a tone that ranges from rowdy, extreme metal, blues like, and twangy Chet Atkins like. Repeat after me: "I will take my guitars to Noll"!

Great site. I heard you guys are known for fixing electric basses. That's good. A friend of mine stopped in apperently about three weeks ago to have his Mexican Fender Jazz Bass with black finish fixed. Hope it turns out well. It'll do him good to have a fixed up bass. Plus, I know he loves that one. So thanks a lot. Bass rules all. Go Jaco! And Mike Stern! (Two of my heroes) May Jaco be at peace forever, and that big jam session in the sky keep swingin'... Hey--I don't know if I can get help by this guestbook from you guys, but--if you can get back to me, then great. I have one major question. How would I go about "de-fretting" my wonderful bass and making it a fretless? Thanks a dozen. My e-mail is kfabrizi@metcenter.org The Met is the school I go to. Remember, I was the one who called for a possible "internship"? I've also dropped in your place a couple of times to have my bridge repaired (when I could've done it my self, hehe) but you did a magnificent job. Your work is excellent, mann. Thanks again.

took my '73 gibson ebo bass to these guys a couple years back. they told me to throw it out and by a p-bass to replace it and that it would cost over $1000 to fix it. it needed a heat press to get the bow out of the neck and a new nut on the truss rod (old one broke off from another idiot trying to adjust it). long story short got it fixed elsewhere in boston for $150 by a gibson recomended neck specialist. thanks guys. my ebo sounds far better than your p-bass recomendation.

OK guys and gals, check this out. I played guitar in a metal band from Boston called Wargasm. We were together for about ten years, and broke up in 1995. My main guitar for most of the duration of that band was an 83 Gibson Flying V. Well, as the story goes, one stupid (inebriated) evening at a club in Boston, circa 1994, I decided to become Pete Townshend, and smashed the V in half (actually, it was a beef that I had with someone that brought me to a complete rage, which resulted in that crazy action). I didn't realize it at the time (because I was drunk!!), but a close friend of mine grabbed the pieces of the guitar and kept them in the case for the next ten years!! Well, Wargasm was asked in January 2004 by the Rawkstars Foundation to do a benefit reunion show on September 18, 2004, and upon hearing about the show, my friend informed me that he had the V. So I got the idea to resurrect the guitar for the show. Well, when I got the guitar back, the neck was totally broken off of the guitar, there were obscenities and band stickers taped all over the guitar with duct tape, the headstock was nearly broken off, the frets were worn to the wood, and totally rusted, the lead pickup was gone, the neck pickup was rusted through, the electronics were so rusted you couldn't move the pots, there was no bridge, no tailpiece, missing machine heads... Just as I left it!!!! Well, I had heard about Jim Landry and Noll guitars through a friend of mine, Jerry Miller, and I had previously had Jim put frets on a Japanese Strat of mine (big Les Paul frets - I highly reccommend them on a Strat!). He did an amazing job, so I had no doubts about his work, and called him to ask about the V. To my delight, he accepted the challenge, and in less than a month and a half, with two weeks to spare before the show, he had it in a condition that I can only describe as better than brand new. How could it be better than new, you may ask? The answer is simple. With the neck glued back on and everything on the guitar (including frets) replaced with the same parts that the original had, and also set up, the guitar played like new, but the best part is that the guitar is twenty years old, and it resonates in such an amazing way. It is broken in, unlike a new guitar, and sounds incredible. Jim recommended that I didn't have the guitar repainted, as the cracked original paint job gives the guitar an antique look. I couldn't agree more. Anyway, the show was incredible, and we recorded and filmed it for an early 2005 DVD release (so look out, and write me if you want to get on the list to buy one!!). I just wanted to write this to thank Jim and everyone at Noll, because they are amazing at what they do, and you can trust them no matter what they tell you (about your guitar, that is...)!!! - Rich Spillberg

I've been playing bass for 10 yrs & have tramped & lived in many different states & countries doing so. When I moved here from the deep Saaaayyyyyyouth, I asked "who's the best around for setups?" Answer: Noll's. They were right - these guys treat my 74 P bass like the gem it is - and when they're finished - it plays like buttuh baby. Pickup installation and electric trouble-shooting are all top notch too! Gotta say something about the amp guy - you want honest good repair work? He's your man. Just to let you know, I am a liar. In my previous post here I said that I would bring my 1979 Les Paul in for a refret in 2003. Well it was 2004 and it plays freaking great now. Those old flat norlin frets are gone. I also have a 1987 Les Paul Custom that needed a fret job and that plays good as well. I almost want to refret it so it plays like the 79. I travel 200+ miles to have this done and recommend these guys again.

Hello visitors to this site. I am a budding luthier who has taken several frankenstrats to Stan, Jim, and Johnny for my setup work. Each time i have them do some work for me, i am amazed at how well the guitar plays afterward. I took the luthier class, and have learned even more from them. I have sent other guitarists there who have far more expensive equipment than me, because they are the only ones i have faith in. their prices are as reasonable as you could expect also. I have had many people ask me about the guitars I have had them set up for me. These guys are the only option for me now. Great job guys, and thank you sincerely. Your friend, Tom.

Hello Everyone!!! I just got my Ovation - Custom Legend back this past Friday April 2, 2004, after a week at Spa Noll. I have been searching for a qualified person to set-up and bring "my baby" back to life. (she's around "twenty" now and needed some special TLC) WOW!!! Was I ever happy with the top-quality, work done by John and with the excellent service provided first, by Stan "over the phone", then by John & Jim when we (my wife & I) got to their shop. I mention this because I am confined to a wheelchair and the great guys at Noll could not have been more accomodating and hospitible if they were family. My wife and I were "blown-away" by the friendliness & professional know-how of these great folks. We both felt very comfortable asking questions, which have probably been asked a million times of them, but these guys took their time and explained & answered every question until I felt very lucky and privilaged to have them work on my guitar. John was so great in discussing my guitar's needs, as well as, what type of playing I liked (Travis Pickin') so he could give me the "set-up" for my style of playing. He also was nice enough to show me his "Chet Atkins - Tenneseean" and asked if I would like to play it. To me this is a great & sacred "trust" when a fellow guitarist offers to let you play such a great instrument. Thanks John, for a truly a "sweet" experience!!! Like all of these "guestbook" testimonials...the new friends my wife & I have made at Noll Guitars, Stan, Jim, & espically John, will be valued, not only for their vast expertise & knowledge...but also for their kindness & helpfullness. If you're looking for a great place to have your guitar serviced or repaired, run, don't walk to see the great guys at Noll Guitars...I promise, you won't regret your choice!!! PS - Like "The Duke" says below, when your wife feels welcome and comfortable you know these guys are "the real deal!!!" Thanks again guys, I'll see you soon to get my amp tuned-up!!!

About 12 years ago a friend of mine had some work done by Stan, when Noll was located near the old Living Room. So I walked in with a Les Paul Standard that I just bought, not knowing what I was getting into and taking a chance on possibly ruining a 1000.00 guitar. I met Stan and told him I wanted him to turn my 2 pickup Les Paul with to 59 humbuckers into Ace Frehley's 3 pickup Les Paul with 3 Dimarzio's. He looked at me in said "please tell me you don't want it to smoke!!! So I said no I just wanted it to look like his, so I brought in a poster from 1979 of Ace. I had no clue what kind of pickups he had in the guitar nut Stan knew just by looking at them. He said they are Dimarzio's. He told me that this was going to be a big job and that he would have it done in two weeks. So two weeks later I get a phone call saying it was done. So Stan put the guitar on the table opened the cover and said I you ready for the unveiling so I said yes. When I saw it my heart stopped and my jaw dropped. He started laughing and asked if I was ok I must have turned white as a sheet, I could not believe he made my dream a reality. I have been going to Noll ever since, and would trust no one else with my guitars. So Stan thanks so much for your honest service over the years. Dave

I have been taking all of my guitars to Noll for well over 15 years. Their work is flawless. They are the ONLY people that I have ever been able to trust completely. They are the only guitar techs that I will ever use.

I first heard of these guys back when I lived in RI. 15 years ago I brought in my 79 Les Paul and Stan talked me out of sunbursting the finish. I was 15 and was amazed they turned down work; true and honest man. Anyway he set up my guitar and it played like butter. I remember he sat me down after doing it and explained everything about the work and the guitar and any issues. Well 15 years later I remembered that and brought in a telecaster that was set up real crummy. I live in Albany, NY now and was visiting my parents and decided to let them at it. Well it was different guitar after that. Played great! And they got it to me the next day because I was leaving to go back to Albany. I will trust no others with major work on a guitar. My les paul will be back for a refret in 2003 sometime.

You guys are the best! You do great work! The relaxed athmosphere that you promote is refreshing and the professionalism is top notch. The obvious pride in workmanship is second to none. My well-loved '94 PRS Custom 22 plays better than ever! It not only plays great but it stays in tune better, even when using the tremolo bar or a capo. Thank you Stan and everyone at Noll. You have a customer for life!

Until I found out about Noll Guitars I wouldn't trust anybody to have my guitars set up, especially some money-hungy worm at Ricks. I've had every guitar I own set up by Nolls and they all come back sounding better than they they ever have...I'm even having them set up my custom shop B.C. Rich Warlock because I know they'll take good care of it and it'll come back to me better than new. I have another custom shop Rich on the way, a 7 string Beast with the works (a $2,375 dollar axe)...and it's going right to Nolls when I get it, that's for sure. Keep up the great work.

I had a huge problem with my imput jack and the saudering job. My band members were ready to kick my ass if I didn't get it fixed SOON. I wassn't going to trust the guys at guitar center because they would most likely screw something up. They also told me it would cost 30 bucks and take them 2 days to get the part in, and then I could get it. However like 3 people I later talked to recomended I go to noll. The guy at the pontiac mills. So I did. They had excellent service and were really cool people. They fixed my guitar in roughly 10 minutes, resaudering and replacing parts. That was impressive. plus they charged the minimum fee of a simple 15 dollars. Screw guitar center, I go to Noll from now on.

For as long as these guys have been open( 20 years or so?) I've had all my repairs done by them. Before they existed I had only NIGHTMARE stories of bad work and guitars I sold because they were never the same after others worked on them. Since Noll Guitars, I've had literally HUNDREDS of fret jobs done, always great of course!, and many repairs and custom mods that others would refuse to try or say could'nt be done! Like the time I brought them my 1936 Epiphone Zenith with the neck off and the heel in splinters!!!!!! No one else would even ATTEMPT fixing it. They all said it could'nt be done, but my boys fixed it up and its remained solid now for a few years and even made it into a feature in this months Vintage Guitar Magazine!!! Now thats a sucess story!Of course by all the other testamonials here you can see they are loved by all and its always a great hang to spend time there.Between their winning personalities and incredible work....Damn, I should just get a room in Pontiac Mills! My fiance,' who delivers alot of my jobs to them cause she works so close always looks forward to hanging out with the boys. Hands off guys shes mine! Anyway, when a guitar players girlfriend like to go there, MAN they must be doing something right!( I guess its cause they're so cute.)My point is, these guys are really the best so Stan ,Jim, and Johnny..... hats off to youse guys for all the great work and friendship.Duke Robillard

Just have to say that Stan, Jim, Bill, and Johnny are awesome. They do by far some of the best work if not in the world, certainly in the country. Jim and Stan not only know about guitars, but about everything else in the world, and are always glad to give people insight. Stan and Jim are the only people I will trust with my equipment. They are meticulous beyond all beliefe, and get the work done readily and professionally.

Entrusted them with my favorite guitar-my TV Yellow LP JR. It was all f'd up when I dropped it off. The difference is night and day now. It stays in tune, the intonation is better than I could have possibly imagined, the frets dont have their flat spots any more...wow. Great Work. you have found a customer for life!

Hello Noll: I've always appreciated the fine work you guys do. My brother has an old rosewood Sigma, which he was ready to scrap because it was virtually unplayable. I had you guys install a new bridge and saddle on it a few weeks ago, and now it plays and sounds great! I'll be down soon for a setup on my Martin. Thanks!

Hey Jim and Stan--congrats on the website--you're finally moving up in the e-world! Anyway, I've got a few guitars that need some light finish work--buffing, etc. I'll call soon to schedule some time. I've always been impressed with your work and your pricing. BTW Jim, I really like my Noll Thinline prototype--have you built any more yet? I used it on a song on my Nov. 2001 Pilgrim Song acoustic instrumental CD release, and it was perfect for the song. Don't know if this will work, but just follow the link under my name to take a listen. The song is called "Sabath Rest." I've also linked your site to my guitar hotlinks page--my Noll Thinline is right there with the Santa Cruz's, BreedlovesMartins, Taylors, Olsons, Ryans, etc., and now has somewhere to go when it gets clicked on!Will talk to you guys soon--Blessings!Ken Totushekhttp://www.graceworksmusic.com

Here's what I like about you guys...You're meticulous and easy to do business with, and you know a whole lot more than the requisite "thing or two" required to hang a shingle in your business. If the guitar is indeed the voice of rock and roll, then you all ain't no mere rock & roll doctors...UB rock & roll throat surgeons.

Once again I am in awe! I brought in a Guild X-702 bass that I've been resurrecting as an ebay purchased project. The first diagnosis was bad, the truss rod end was broken right off. These guys got right into it though and after what I'm sure was nightmare task - were able to dig out enough of the rod to make the neck adjustment and also shimmed and set the nut. And at a last minute request Jim replaced some of the electronics and the tuners (within two hours) and let me tell you, this bass now plays beautiful! I strongly recommend these guys to anyone who cares at all about their axe. Nothing but great to deal with and the work is just top-notch all the way - Thanks guys! Once again you amazed me!

What can I say. If you need the services of expert lutiers(and really great guys) Stan, Jim (and John) are the folks to see. In a two month period I had 2 electrics (Fernandesw/ Floyd Rose and Epi - Pee Wee) and 2 Guilds worked on at Nolls. One of the Guilds a D-25 as my first good guitar andrequired sound hole cracks fixing, re-attachement of the saddle, and a setup and fret recrown. The work was tremendous and any issues that I had were addressed with thefocus on my satisfaction. Highly recommended for all your luthier and repair needs.
